Time for a fresh start

There are many people for whom things have not worked out as they wished.   Perhaps they made a wrong decision that has had significant impact upon their lives.   They long to put the past behind them and wipe the slate clean. 

In the 18th century, the Duchess of Marlborough said, “God knows we all need mending, and none more than myself”.   She was an old woman who realized that despite her privileged status, she could do with a fresh start.   If we are honest with ourselves, like her, we can all do with a fresh start.

The question is, can we have a fresh start?   Can we wipe the slate clean and put the past behind us?   No doubt, people have tried all sorts of things to change their situation.   Things like determination to be a good person and live a good life.  Some have made resolutions which, sadly did not last long, while others have given themselves to good deeds.   However, all have that none of these things work.

However, the Bible states the  good news that we can have a fresh start.   No matter what we have done; no matter how bad things are, we can have a clean slate and put the past behind us.   This is what Easter is all about – a fresh start.   At Easter, even nature springs to life and shrubs that looked dead begin to bud, with the promise of new life.

Easter is the time when Jesus rose from the dead and ushered in a new beginning for mankind.   He defeated death and paid for all our wrong doings, so we can have a fresh start.   This is how the Bible puts it.   “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).   Here you have it, the promise of a new life, and a fresh start for anyone.    This is God’s promise to you and me.

To enjoy this fresh start, as the text says, you will have to be in Jesus Christ, that is, you will have to put your trust in Jesus Christ, who died to pay for all our wrong doings which is called sin.   Millions of people all over the world have trusted in Jesus Christ and are enjoying this fresh start in life.   It enables them to love and forgive wrong; it gives them a real sense of purpose and fulfilment.    Best of all, it gives them solid hope for now and the future.

As you read this, you might say to yourself, “not for me, I do not need a fresh start, I am quite happy as I am.”  If on the other hand, you feel, like so many people that you indeed do need to put the past behind you and start afresh, then confess your wrongdoings to Christ and commit your life to him.  You will never regret it.
