The large estate of Chelmsley Wood was developed by Birmingham City Council from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s on land which was once part of the ancient Forest of Arden to enable the slum clearance and redevelopment of Birmingham City centre.
One of the early residents was Pauline Lineham who had a concern to establish a Gospel witness on the estate and she opened her home each Lord’s Day initially for prayer. Alec Taylor was one of those attending the meetings in Pauline’s home and In November 1973 services for worship began. The church was formally constituted with eight members and a Reformed Baptist Constitution and Statement of Faith at a meeting held on 17 October 1974 when Alec Taylor was set aside to serve as an elder, Douglas Boynton as church secretary and David Guthrie as church treasurer.
Early in 1975 morning services started at Bennetts Well School and evening services at Alder Hall. A recognition service for the appointment of Alec Taylor to the office of elder was held on the 1 March 1975.
At a meeting of the church held on 4 October 1985, the church had eight members, it was agreed to appoint Alec Taylor to the full-time ministry and on the 1 December 1985, he became the first Pastor of the church.
In April 1986 morning services started at the newly built Fordbridge Centre.
Alec Taylor served as full-time Pastor until June 2002, and he continued to work as a part-time Pastor. At the end of 2002, the membership had risen to thirty-seven. In September 2003 Gearoid Marley was appointed as Assistant Pastor working alongside Alec Taylor. In October 2004 Alec Taylor retired and Gearoid Marley was inducted as Pastor. Alec resigned as elder in September 2008 and moved to Trowbridge at the end of 2010.
In May 2011 Gearoid Marley resigned as Pastor and since then the church has had an itinerant ministry.
The church consisted of twenty members at the end of 2025.
